Craft Program for Dementia Patients
written by Jenna Park Apr 18th, 2025
At first, I was unsure of what to expect. I didn’t know how the participants would respond or if they would enjoy what I had planned. But over time, I started to notice how much joy they found in these small projects. One woman, who rarely speaks, carefully places heart and star stickers on her frame with such focus and joy that it’s hard not to smile watching her. Another man always asks for advice on what colors to use, and we end up laughing as he makes the brightest, most colorful flowers possible.
Even though some participants can’t remember everything from week to week or even moment to moment, it’s clear how much they enjoy being present in the activity. Some need help peeling stickers or holding pencils, but that doesn’t stop them from being creative. Watching them reminds me that joy can be found in even the smallest moments, and that self-expression isn’t limited by memory or ability. I always enjoy design the craft and altering my ideas based on past feedback.
This experience has allowed me to expand my understanding. It’s taught me that making a difference doesn’t have to involve something big or dramatic. Sometimes, just sitting with someone and doing a small craft together is enough. I look forward to returning each month, ready to create and connect again.
