Out of Rhythm: Study of Atrial fibrillation

Introduction: Defining Atrial fibrillation (AF)

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular rhythm of the heartbeat, which is often caused by high blood pressure, aging, and other heart conditions (heart failure, heart valve disease, coronary heart disease, and etc.) It is known as the most common type of irregular rhythm of the heartbeat, affecting millions of people worldwide, this complication could lead to many horrible health outcomes that project the increase of Atrial fibrillation by 12.1 million in 2030. Some patients with AF could have no symptoms, and find their condition through physical exams but some common symptoms that others may have are fatigue, rapid and irregular heartbeat, fluttering or “thumping” in the chest, and chest pain/pressure. AF has a higher risk of correlating to other health complications such as heart failure and stroke which eventually increases mortality and hospitalizations. AF tends to affect the older age group therefore associates with other health conditions, this creates risk for the poor condition of AF patients.

Atrial fibrillation outcomes

Studies investigate how income, education, race, and neighborhood environments could affect the outcome of Atrial fibrillation patients. People find that socially and economically disadvantaged populations are at higher risk for worse conditions of AF. Patients who live in a deprived neighborhood struggle with some factors such as, limited access to healthcare, fewer pharmacies, and less health food options. Addressing and accepting the issue allows for public health to approach and improve these factors to increase the access of care in the area.

Raising awareness of our community: Las Vegas, Nevada

Lower income neighborhoods in Nevada often lack the consistent access of preventative care and specialist services, this may cause residents to delay seeking care until symptoms are severe, and even if they were to be diagnosed patients may not receive the adequate care required, this risks the complications of their condition. Las Vegas often experiences harsh weather during the summer often exceeding 110°F (43°C) during the summer. Heat related dehydration and electrolyte imbalances can trigger AF episodes. Especially to those who are unable to access air conditioning or proper air flow are at greater risk of cardiovascular risk, along with AF.
