Ameliorating risks of elder maltreatment for older adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities

written by Hannah Anh   August, 2025

A person living with an intellectual and developmental disability (also known as IDD) are more susceptible to experiencing maltreatment. More specifically, many from the older population may be a target of mistreatment which can be done through many examples such as internet crimes. In addition, many of these individuals live with other health conditions that cause higher rates in this maltreatment. Now, individuals who have IDD live a longer life, and using advance care planning(ACP) may open the door to lower the chances of maltreatment. This planning aims to help older adults identify their values and align their future needs and plans according to it. To help more people with IDD, the healthcare providers must learn how to use the right communication methods and skills to help these older adults effectively.
